Driving control strategy enhancement tool

Our simple-to-use driver advisor system empowers train drivers to optimise their performance, in turn, decreasing costs and carbon emissions. The plug-and-play system can be viewed live in-cab via a tablet, advising drivers on how to adjust their driving while on the move.

It captures intelligent data in real-time, including maximum breaking rate, train energy usage, and train traction characteristics. This data is then presented visually in figures and tables on a tablet to help drivers easily track energy performance and enhance their skills through continuous monitoring. The adaptable virtual dashboard can be tailored to show data that best suits the driver’s needs.

Energy modelling

We are experts at generating energy modelling simulations. EneRail’s unrivalled understanding of tractions systems means the team can deploy modelling for any type of power system, helping customers to significantly improve energy use. The modelling simulations we create are represented in virtual illustrations, allowing users to see the most energy efficient options quickly. Rail systems use a considerable amount of energy in day-to-day operations, with the whole-life cost of the energy used to operate a train potentially amounting to about as much as the train itself. Due to increasing environmental concerns, rail operators are facing growing pressure to save energy. Driving is one of the key roles in the operation of the train, so the right strategy for controlling the driving can significantly influence energy saving performance. This operation is currently receiving increasing attention all over the world.

Here at EneRail, our group of railway experts have developed an integrated technology solution to reduce the daily energy consumption for rail operators. The technology aims to provide enhanced control strategies for drivers to achieve energy-efficient operation. Compared with other similar technologies, the solution we provide is more focused on empowering drivers to apply more efficient behaviours when they see the conditions allow. For each case, we model the route and vehicle, calculate the optimal driving control strategy, and present the results to the drivers in smart ways.

EneRail was originally founded within the University of Birmingham. From our base at UKRRIN on the University of Birmingham campus, we provide empowering driver advisory systems and energy modelling simulations that deliver tangible savings to power networks.​ Our mission is to decrease carbon emissions associated with power systems through simple performance improvements.
